FIA GT - Zolder
Markus and Marc Lieb finished 3rd in GT2 in the last European round of the FIA GT Championship in Zolder, Belgium, scoring the first podium of the ProSpeed Competition Porsche 911 GT3-RSR #60. The works-car of Collard-Westbrook finished 4th and the team stepped up to 3rd in the team championship. Porsche works-driver Lieb qualified the car in 3rd, just behind Manu Collard who was 2nd.
Lieb had a difficult first lap being blocked by spinning cars and dropped all the way down to 7th in GT2. From there on, he started catching up and brought the car back to 5th lapping equal times with the leaders and catching the cars in front. Markus took over after about 50 minutes and passed quickly one of the Ferraris. After that, Markus had an uneventful stint lapping constantly good times, until Jamie Davis hit Manu Collard and the two spun off. Markus passed them both and was running in 2nd position until the last pitstop. In reality, Markus brought the car back in 3rd, because the GT2 champions AF Corse had already stopped twice. Some time was lost in the pitlane, because the engine wouldn't start right away. Lieb finally got on the way for the last stint, but the gap to BMS Ferrari was too big and Lieb crossed the finish line in 3rd position.
"First, I would like thank Marc for the great job he did for us. It was very nice to work with him and he was amazing in the qualifying and did very good in the race. My target was to get on the podium so I'm satisfied with the 3rd place. We were a bit lucky and gained when our sister car was pushed out. That was bad for the team, because we were in a position to score much more points than BMS and now we gained only one more. It's been a tough season and we have had more than our share of disappointments, so a little luck was welcome.
It wasn't a perfect weekend, not even close. We had some problems in the first practice and I could only do a few laps. I struggled with the brakes and wasn't happy with the gear ratios. We worked hard to find a good set-up. Marc's experience was a great asset and I did the final changes and I'm reasonably happy with what we had in the race. It was also nice to notice that we had exactly the same thoughts about the car. Marc was unlucky in the start and lost a junk of time in the first two laps and it basically dropped us out of the fight for the win. At least 2nd place was possible, but the slow 2nd stop put a nail on that one. Still, everyone in the team and both drivers did a very good job and 3rd is a nice reward for it.
I've had a chance to race with Manu and Richard the whole season, but since there are a few differences in the two cars, it was even more interesting to have a factory driver in my car. I learned a few things and I'm quite satisfied with my pace in the race. I hope we will have a positive season final in Argentina and the fight for 2nd in team standings is still going on strong."
