FIA GT - Silverstone preview
Markus has signed a last-minute deal with DKR Engineering to race the team's Corvette C6.R in the 1st round of the FIA GT Championship in Silverstone this weekend. Markus will share the car with a former teammate Jos Menten. The car is the same as the pair drove in 2006 in Le Mans Series.
"I planned to do the full FIA GT Championship this season and it was very disappointing when it didn't work out. Therefore, it's great that I will now get a chance to start the season in Silverstone and even better that I will do it in a GT1 Corvette. It's the last season for the current GT1 cars and it's a privilege to be a part of it. I raced this same car in 2006 in LMS and FFSA GT and have to admit that it is the best car I've ever driven. I haven't been in a GT1 car since, but I'm sure it will all come back very quickly. It's also good to race again with my good friend Jos Menten. We were teammates in 2005 and shared this car in 2006. Last time we raced together was in the 24 Hours of Zolder last year, when we fought back through the field to finish 2nd in class and 3rd overall.
The competition in GT1 is as tough as it has ever been. We will not only be against Maserati, Aston Martin and Saleen, but there are 3 very good Corvette line-ups and some new cars like Ford GT and Nissan. We will naturally start the weekend as underdogs, because neither Jos or me have had a chance to test the car, but I'm confident that we will be competitive in the race. We've both been quick in a Corvette and we have a good package in Silverstone. I'm looking forward to an interesting weekend and aim for a top result."
