6 Hours of Estoril

Markus finished 1st in GTV3 class and 3rd overall in the traditional 6 Hours of Estoril race last weekend. He shared the Porsche 997 GT3 Cup ran by Belgian Speedlover team of Andre Van Hoof with Oskar Slingerland. Markus qualified in 3rd row, but in wet conditions the Dutch-Finnish duo was among the fastest and with perfect tactic climbed to the top spot after the long race, beating most of the faster cars.

"I've been working with Oskar for over a year now and enjoyed every moment of it. We first raced together in Spa 24 Hours in July and ended up on the podium, so it was good to keep it up. I didn't have a real target, because we took the race as a practice weekend giving Oskar a lot of track time, but in the end you always want to win when the green lights are on.

The free practice was excellent. The car run well from the 1st lap on and we didn't need to work our way around the usual problems. First session was wet and 2nd session was dry and I was on top of the sheets in both. Oskar spend some time learning the track and then did a long run in the 3rd session and we felt ready and decided to skip the last one. Qualifying was a bit trickier as we had a problem with one of the tyres, but in the end I was able to go out again and set the 6th quickest time overall and 2nd in class. For a 6h race, it was a good place to start from.

It started raining before the race and it stayed wet throughout the race. I got a good start and got to 3rd on the 1st lap. A couple of laps later I was on 2nd place behind Joao Barbosa in the Rollcentre GT3 Mosler and we were pulling away from the rest of the field. In the tough conditions it was hard to keep up with the GT3 car hacing much more power, ABS brakes and traction control, so I was just doing my own race knowing that the bigger car had to stop much earlier for fuel. I was able to do almost 2 hours before pitting the 1st time and we were leading the last 40 minutes of it.

When Oskar took over the conditions were even worse and it was aquaplaning all over with zero visibility, really tricky. He got caught out with it on his outlap and spend a moment in the gravel, but luckily we were able to continue with just a small delay. After that he did an excellent stint of over 2 hours and we were always up there among the top runners. He earned the nickname "rain master" in Spa and proved it right in Estoril!

We took a bit of a gamble and decided to try to do the race with only 2 stops. It worked out and we were the only team doing it, spending much less time in the pits than anybody else. I kept pushing until about 20min before the end we took the lead in the class and 3rd overall. After that, I cooled down a bit, because the bigger GT2 and GT3 Porsche in front were a bit too far away, so I just brought it home without risks.

We seem to end up on the podium every time with Oskar, so I have to make sure that we do more races together again next year. It was great to beat many of the well-established teams and drivers and the best prize for me was to see how happy Oskar and all the Speedlover guys were with this result. Thanks for everyone for a great weekend! I'm already looking forward to the 2010 season."
